Trump announces defense chief Mattis to retire in February
US. President Donald Trump announced late Thursday that Secretary of Defense James Mattis will will retire “with distinction” at the end of February, new chief to be named shortly.
Trump previously referred to him as “sort of a Democrat.” Mattis, seen as one of the steadiest but also more independent members of Trump’s cabinet, has served as a low-profile counterweight to the president in his often abrasive treatment of U.S. allies.
