The viral video about Libyan slavery is not convincing enough – Area Manager Afriqiya Airways’

The purported video which has gone viral around the world that shows some African migrants in Libya being sold into slavery recently and has courted outrage around the world is not convincing enough to arrive at such a conclusion.

This was said by the Afriqiya Airways’ Area Manager Mr. Hisham M. Deeb who is also a Libyan national living in Ghana.

According to Mr. Hisham, the video which is being circulated that has led to the condemnation of Libyans is not really something that should lead to such conclusion as it raises a lot of doubt about its authenticity.

Related story: The Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected claims that the country is engaged in slavery. The Charge d’Affaires to Ghana Salah Al. Kony denounced says the video on the purported slave trade in Libya making rounds not only false but unfortunate.

Reacting to the footage on the alleged slave trade incident which CNN shared on its network, he said “the video is very short and the way she was explaining (CNN narrator) I’m not convinced at all, first of all, she said that we are driving our car at night pretending to look for a missing person (referring to the CNN narrator) this cannot happen. I am a Libyan, even me I can’t be driving my car at night because I’m not sure what would happen”

Mr. Hisham in an interview with www.fernilnews.com believes there is more to the video than what is being speculated and that he thinks there is more at play regarding this issue.
“To my personal knowledge, the reason behind that (slavery allegation) is I don’t know if you’re aware of Italy or the Europeans suffering from the African migrants and they want to block that (migrants from intering Europe) but they couldn’t because of the long distance and they (the Europeans) have been asking Libya to approve building a camp in Libya whenever they arrest migrants, they would send them (migrants) back to Libya which the government of Libya refused, that would not be good for Africa and for the people of Libya as well. I’m sure that the international press want to do that to force Libya to accept that”

Mr. Hisham M. Deeb in an interview with Musa Inuwa

Recently, CNN showed a video of some African migrants in Libya being sold into slavery and that has caused outrage around the world with many individuals and civil society organizations calling on the Libyan government to take action to remedy the situation.

The United Nations, the African Union, and other international organizations have also added their voice to the chorus urging Libya to do more in tackling the situation.

The publication is currently under investigation by the concerned Libyan authorities.
