Researchers hint on the use of AI to create treasure maps for biodiversity

For over a decade, researchers from various institutions have collaborated to compile nearly one-and-a-half million location records from research publications, online databases, museums, and field studies. This extensive dataset has enabled them to produce the largest global map of insect diversity to date. By using ants as a proxy, the study aims to close major knowledge gaps in biodiversity and contribute to reversing the decline of species.
Employing machine learning algorithms, the researchers analyzed vast amounts of ecological data, including environmental variables and existing species distributions.
