Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been elected as the new Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency after emerging victorious in Thursday’s by-election.
Ms Alhassan the widow of the late MP for the area, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyapong won the poll by 12, 041 votes representing 68.30%.
Delali Kwasi Brempong, the National Democratic Congress’ candidate had 5, 341 votes representing 30.52%.
William Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana both managed a paltry 102 and 17 votes respectively.
The NDC, however, pulled out of the race after a shooting incidence at the Bawaleshie JHS polling station.
No death was recorded but six persons were injured in the course of the melee.
The NDC in a press conference addressed by the Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo blamed the governing NPP of being behind the shooting but the NPP in a counter-press conference said the NDC orchestrated the pull out.
