Laws governing museums in Ghana are archaic – Fritz Baffour Laments

Former director of the Ghana Museums and Monument Board and member of parliament for Ablekuma South Hon Fritz Baffour, has lamented that laws governing the Ghana Museums and Monument Board (GMMB) are archaic and needs to be looked into again .
The former director made this revelation at this years Museums conversations which started today 26th November 2018 at the GMMB premises in Accra .
He also stressed the need for such properties to be protected by law and a legal office for the GMMB comes in handy for such situations .
He also recommended that, there should be a human resource person for the GMMB who would see to it that all staff recruited will have some affinity to the institution .
As a believer in a living museum, he stressed on the need for proper transition after exposing the fact though he has prepared handing over notes before exiting the GMMB he has not gotten the opportunity to meet the director for a proper handing over and conversation to ensure continuity from where he left off as director he said.
The Museum Conversation is program organized by the GMMB and the GOETHE INSTITUT to stress on the fact the museums in Africa are entering a new phase likewise the way history and arts are shown to the public hence the need for directors and curators of a new generation to critically assess the old collections and forms of display. In many countries, independence paused the collection of new works, therefore collections were stalled and are the status quo of a former time. The public’s perception of museums is often not positive and the establishments attract few local visitors. One of the central questions of the Museum Dialogues is what a post-colonial museum should look like and what the form of a museum on the African continent shall be in the future.
