Is Ghana’s wheel of justice too slow?

It is said that, the wheel of justice grind slowly but grind exceedingly fine but can that be said of the Ghanaian Justice System?

Taking the case of Joyce at Agona Swedru for instance is one of the few unfortunate legal tussle cases in Ghana .

This is what has lead to the revelation of Mr Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng on his crime check foundation who seeks to showcase the plight of prisoners .

The plight of this young lady Joyce from Agona Swedru made post this on his facebook page questioning Ghana’s justice system .

He said ‘’WHAT KIND OF JUSTICE DO WE ADMINISTER IN THIS COUNTRY?

The adopted mother of Joyce dies and wills her four bedroom house at Agona Swedru, and an amount of twelve thousand eight hundred Ghana cedis to her 18yr old adopted daughter. The family of the deceased fights Joyce for the property till a court tells them they have no right to the property. Not satisfied, the family members connive with a tenant in Joyce’s house to put a charge of stealing on the poor girl who has just given birth. The court asks Joyce to pay nine thousand six hundred Ghana cedis or in default serve one year in prison. Joyce is jailed. But just read what the judge adds – (The tenant should sell the 4 bedroom house and use it to defray the debt). I know you won’t believe this but that is the stark reality! We won’t stop at seeking justice for poor Joyce. Join us reverse this arbitrary ruling!’’

Looking at the number of people on remand whose cases are yet to be called exposes us as a country ,how many years do we want people to languish in jails that do not have the requisite facilities and is also overburdened with remand prisoners .

Though the justice for all program is commendable they need to do more in such cases.

The program also by Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng to expose such cases is very commendable and I like his spirit to fight for such people .
