Investigation commences into death of Ghanaian police chief in Togo
Ghanaian police is set to embark on a major investigation following the death of one of its officers with the Mobile Force Unit in neighbouring Togo.
Police in Aflao in the Volta region who responded to reports of the incident identified the deceased as Chief Inspector Israel Theophilus Dotse.
Preliminary investigations reveal that on Thursday, April 4, the deceased had gone to the Togolese capital Lome with one Samuel Anyidoho, a mechanic, to buy a car engine.
The deceased who had spent barely two days in the city had complained of severe heart pains.
“On 06/04/19, between the hours of 15:00hrs and 16:00hrs they went to buy the engine and whilst they were with the seller, the deceased complained of severe heart pains. The mechanic rushed him to Centre Meico Ong Femme Environment Saante, a hospital in Togo for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival by medical doctor of the facility”, a police report sighted by online portal Daily mail Ghana indicates.
Police officers who were dispatched to Togo-Dzidzorli Third District Police Station reported that a Gota hand set, Nasco cell phone, Police ID Card, Voters ID card, all bearing the deceased’s name have been retrieved.
A sum of GHC350.00 and 7,500 CFA were also handed over to the Aflao District Commander, Supt Obrako Bempah, who led the team to Togo.
The lifeless body of the deceased was later transferred to Aflao and has since been deposited at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital.
A Toyota Corolla with registration number GE 6100-15, on which the deceased and his mechanic were on board, has since been impounded at the Aflao Police Station
Police, who are treating the death as suspicious, were yet to contact the family of the deceased at the time of filing this report.
