Ghana’s referendum for creation of 6 new regions underway
A total of 2,260,724 voters have began voting in a referendum towards the creation of six new regions: Western North, Bono East, Ahafo, Savannah, North East, and Oti.
The six proposed regions will be carved out of the Western, Brong Ahafo, Northern and Volta regions.
Per the 1992 Constitution, at least 50 per cent of the people within the enclaves of the proposed regions must take part in the referendum and, at least 80 per cent of them must vote YES, before they could come into fruition.
The voting is taking place in 4,798 polling stations within the affected enclaves.
Voting started at 7 am and will end at 5 pm.
According to the EC, “The associated ballot colour for YES on each ballot paper is yellow, and that of NO is brown”.
The election management body said: “Registered voters within the proposed regions are to thumbprint in the portion provided on each ballot paper by voting YES or NO and not both”.
