Ghana is the 2nd most peaceful country in Africa. Global Peace Index
The Republic of Ghana has been ranked as the second most peaceful country in Africa and 38th in the world according to the 2021 Global Peace Index under the auspices of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
Ghana comes second to Mauritius which is ranked as the most peaceful country in Africa and 28th in the world. Ghana scored 1.715 which represents a two-point upward movement from the previous Global Peace Index report.
According to the Global Peace Index, this is its 15th edition, which ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness. It is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and the GPI is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness. The report also presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis to-date on trends in peace, its economic value and how to develop peaceful societies.
Other African countries in the top five include Botswana which comes third, Sierra Leone and the Gambia.
Iceland holds the enviable position of the world’s most peaceful country with New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia making the top five.
The least peaceful countries are mostly from the Middle East. These countries include Iraq which is ranked 159th, South Sudan (160th), Syria (161st), Yemen (162nd) and Afghanistan which is at the bottom of the rankings as the 163rd.
Ghana’s economy, like many other countries, has been hit by the Coronavirus pandemic and this ranking is likely to shore up investor confidence and attract and retain foreign direct investments to the country.
