NDC Aspirant throws weight behind Mahama

A flag bearer-aspirant Mr Elikplim Agbemava of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has dropped out of the race and thrown his weight behind former President John Dramani Mahama.

“I wish to announce that after much soul-searching, prayer and consultations with well-meaning Ghanaians, loved ones and family, I have decided to abate my push for the presidency come 2020 and throw my weight behind His Excellency John D. Mahama,” the legal practitioner said in a press statement on Friday, 7 December 2018.

According to him, even though his decision is “unexpected”, it is “in line with the majority of the views in our great party that he [Mr Mahama] is the best person to lead us into battle come 2020”.

He said the future vision and ambitions of the NDC must be anchored on a broad-based support that will make it easy to unite the party.

“In the circumstances, I will not be picking up nomination forms by the deadline set by the National Executive Committee. I encourage my campaign team and all supporters to submit to the vision of the GO4JM Campaign for total and a resounding victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2020,” he stressed.

The nomination forms cost GHS20,000.

The filing fee, which was originally pegged at GHS400,000 has been reduced to GHS300,000 after the Council of Elders of the party intervened.

So far, seven flag bearer-aspirants have picked nomination forms to run in the presidential primary.

They are former president John Mahama, Prof Joshua Alabi, Mr Sylvester Mensah, Mr Stephen Atubiga, Mr Alban Bagbin, Mr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah and Alhaji Nurudeen Iddrisu.
