Ghana’s Parliament engages sign language interpreters

Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, has disclosed that Ghana’s parliament has employed the services of sign language interpreters to enhance the work of parliament.

“We should be pleased to join sister parliaments in UK, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe in the employment of sign language as a medium of interpretation in parliament,” he said in his welcome address as parliament resumed from recess on Tuesday, 30 October 2018.

The Speaker announced that parliament will, therefore, start using sign language interpreters immediately.

Prof Oquaye further urged the legislators to be punctual and take their duties seriously as the House considers some important bills and matters that could not be debated before recess.

Key among the items to be discussed is the 2019 Budget, which the Finance Minister is scheduled to present to the House on Thursday, 15 November 2018.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has praised Prof Oquaye for sanctioning the use of sign language interpreters.
