Russia to Supply India ‘Uninterrupted’ Fuel Amid Ukraine War Tensions
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday pledged uninterrupted fuel supplies to India, signaling Moscow’s commitment to deepening energy ties despite growing international pressure amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The announcement came during Putin’s two-day state visit to New Delhi, his first since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, where he met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss expanding trade and defense cooperation between the two longstanding partners.
India, the world’s largest buyer of Russian arms and seaborne oil, has warmly welcomed Putin, underscoring the resilience of their bilateral relationship even as New Delhi navigates complex geopolitical dynamics. However, India’s response to Putin’s fuel supply offer was measured. India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, emphasized that Indian energy companies make purchasing decisions based on evolving market conditions and commercial considerations, reflecting the impact of U.S. sanctions and tariffs.
India’s energy imports from Russia are projected to drop to a three-year low this month, influenced by U.S. punitive tariffs imposed during the Trump administration over India’s continued Russian oil purchases. Despite these challenges, Russian officials have expressed ambitions to boost bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030 by increasing imports from India.
Meanwhile, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Rick Switzer is scheduled to visit India next week to discuss a potential trade deal aimed at reducing tariffs, signaling ongoing U.S. engagement with India amid the geopolitical balancing act.
Indian state refiners, including Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum, have reportedly placed orders for Russian oil shipments in January, taking advantage of discounted prices offered by non-sanctioned suppliers, according to Reuters.
Prime Minister Modi described India’s partnership with Russia as “a guiding star,” highlighting the enduring trust and mutual respect that have sustained the relationship through decades of global upheaval.
As India continues to balance its strategic ties with Russia and its growing engagement with the U.S. and other global powers, energy cooperation remains a critical yet carefully managed component of its foreign policy amid the complexities of the Ukraine conflict.
