Gov’t received 10 million cedis from MTN to support girls in ICT project

The government of Ghana through its initiative “Girls-in-ICT” has received GHC10 million from the telecommunication giant in the country MTN, to bridge the gender ICT divide.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation minister received the cheque on behalf of the government, said digital technology has become indispensable in every human endeavour, and the government would continue to train girls to enhance their capacity in the use of ICT.

She added that this would eliminate gender inequality in the ICT jobs in the country.

She said the government would improve infrastructure and the technical abilities of the management of the Girls-in-ICT Programme to enable young women in the country to receive the best ICT training to allow them to contribute their quota in national development.

She disclosed that the Girls-in-ICT Programme currently selects 100 girls from each region after a competitive selection process and camps these brilliant young women in Accra to interact with female engineers and women in ICT to enable them to have practical training in ICT applications.

“It’s my dream to train more girls in ICT to help bridge the gender divide existing within this sector of the economy, so I am particularly excited that MTN has honoured my request to assist this Initiative”, she said.

In his part, the Chief Corporate Services Officer (CCSO) of MTN, Mr Samuel Koranteng, said the MTN would support the government’s Initiative to train young women in ICT to empower women to have equal opportunity concerning young people men in the country.
